2 THINGS YOU SHOULDN'T SAY WHILE VECTORIZING

2 THINGS YOU SHOULDN'T SAY WHILE VECTORIZING

Today we want to talk about some of the challenging communication and requests that we receive in our career. Very often clients who have little knowledge or understanding of graphic design and especially vectorization unintentionally ask things that put both parties into an awkward situation. We have decided to choose 2 of the mostly asked requests that make both the correspondence and business go slower and complicated.

Recently a new client sent us a number of orders to vectorize the images. The estimate was promptly sent to the client. Shortly after that we received a request to convert the images for cheaper price. Even though we had already offered the customer a 10% discount taking into consideration that there were more than 5 images submitted for vector conversion. Since at iVectorize we are ready to support our clients and their business we agreed on giving 25% discount instead of 10%, thus significantly cutting down the profit margin, bringing it almost to 0. The next message that we received was another request to do a 50 % discount with the promise if we did our job well we would start receiving more images for vectorization in the future from the client.

At first sight all sounds fair enough and business oriented. However, before making such requests we should ask our customers to take into consideration the fact that iVectorize.com already operates based on low price solution and before offering our price we calculate the effort and hours to be spent for converting the raster images to vector. Therefore, there is a margin below which it is simply not profitable to run the service. Such requests resemble to the fact that for example you go to an Apple store and ask salesperson to give you the iPhone not for its retail price but for half price, and if you find the phone functional and attractive you will come back and buy 10 more phones every month.

Ask for the portfolio

We understand that very often customers look for cheaper vectorizing solutions forgetting that the amount of work and the amount of hours spent on tracing the image define the final price. And at iVectorize.com since we operate based on the fair policy we do not over charge our customers. And similar requests for 50 % discount can be simply not profitable for the designer, or for the agency or service. On top of all, it would be nice not to underestimate or doubt the abilities of the vector service providers as no one wants to be devalued as if one has decided to run a business it means that he/she must understand and appreciate the clients and cater them the best service and quality. Besides, in today’s world of social media there are many ways to check the work quality of a service, especially, the one that is connected to graphic design industry. Additionally you can request the portfolio and based on the results evaluate the quality of the work.

Another frequently spread habit among the customers is to submit images for vectorization without filling in the instructions form. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible to guess the expectations of the client. And often after vectorizing the image the clients start asking for major or small changes, thus making everything more complicated and time wise longer.

Ask for the portfolio

If you are not sure of what to write, it is a good idea always ask for advice from the vector service provider. This way you can also help both yourself and the service save time for unnecessary future misunderstanding and failing to meet your expectations.
